The Plastic Vortex, which is an area in the North Pacific Gyre that’s known for its high amounts of trash, is about to become more clean. The Covanta Energy Corporation and Project Kaisei announced at the Clinton Global Initiative yesterday that they are teaming up to see if they can convert the trash from the Plastic Vortex into fuel. Covanta Energy which specializes in energy-from-waste and renewable energy projects, wants to test the effectiveness of a new waste-to-fuel technology for non-recyclable plastics and plastic waste. The companies have a goal of converting 50 tons of ocean trash into renewable fuel each year. If successful, the new partnership will showcase how certain energy initiatives can turn a polluted area into an energy generation opportunity.

William Hederman, a former director of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has joined Deloitte. Hederman became the founding director of FERC’s market oversight and investigations office, after California electricity shortages and Enron’s collapse forced the group to rethink market oversight. Hederman will work within the energy and resources group at Deloitte and help existing clients comply with federal regulations.
